Illustrative and Bio-Organic Tattoos: Color, Black and Grey and Cover-Ups

James Wisdom is a tattooer, fine artist and educator at Atmosphere Tattoo Gallery in Arlington Heights, and has been tattooing since 2001. James's work focuses on illustrative and bio-organic themes and often includes cover-ups, refreshes and integrations with existing tattoos, in both black and grey and color.

James's background includes a tattoo apprenticeship, a BFA in oil painting and an MFA in studio art. That formal training, along with long-term study of tattoo history, aesthetics and technique, goes into every piece. The aim is tattoos that are structurally sound, visually distinct and made to last. James also serves on the Board of Directors of the Alliance of Professional Tattooists.

Each design is planned for fit and flow, with a strong silhouette and clear contrast that flatter the body and read at a glance. Projects start with a consultation, then planned sessions paced for comfort, with clear expectations on the technical side, the cost and the healing, from the first sketch through aftercare.
